Where Stellar Students Soar

Important ELO Program Update

Posted Date: 11/05/26 (10:00 AM)

Dear Monte Vista TK - 8 Families,

At MPUSD and Monte Vista TK - 8 School are committed to providing students with high-quality Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELO) that support academic growth, build connections and create meaningful experiences beyond the school day.

As our programs continue to grow, we are making an important change to better serve students participating in the Monte Vista TK - 8 ELO program.

Beginning January 6, 2027, the Monte Vista ELO program will operate at two locations:

  • Grades TK - 5: Students will continue attending ELO at Monte Vista TK - 8 School.

  • Grades 6 - 8: Students will attend ELO at 251 Soledad Drive, a half a mile and close to the Monte Vista TK - School.

Why are we making this change?

Our Expanded Learning Opportunities program has grown significantly, and that is something worth celebrating. More students than ever are participating in after-school enrichment, athletics, clubs and other activities across the Monte Vista campus.

With that growth comes a challenge. Each afternoon, hundreds of students participate in programs and activities that share the same fields, playgrounds, multipurpose rooms and other campus spaces.

While we are proud to offer so many opportunities, we also recognize that limited space can affect the quality and variety of experiences we want every student to enjoy.

By creating two dedicated ELO locations, we can provide more space, more age-appropriate activities and greater access to the enrichment opportunities our students deserve.

For our middle school students, the 251 Soledad location will offer a dedicated environment designed around their interests and developmental needs. Students will continue participating in a structured program that includes academic enrichment, recreation, snacks and engaging activities and projects. Additionally, students will have access to four themed rooms designed to spark creativity, curiosity, exploration and innovation. These spaces will provide new opportunities for hands-on learning, collaboration and discovery. We look forward to sharing more details as we continue developing these exciting spaces for our middle school students.

For our younger students, this change will reduce crowding and create additional space at the current Monte Vista location for expanded play, learning and enrichment.

What does this mean for families?

We recognize that changes to after-school routines can raise questions, particularly for families with children in multiple grade levels or students participating in school sports and clubs.

To help make this transition as smooth as possible:

  • Transportation will be available. Middle school students will have access to district transportation from Monte Vista to the 251 Soledad Drive location immediately after school. An additional route will accommodate students participating in school sports and clubs.

  • Sibling transportation will be available. A return route to Monte Vista will be provided for eligible middle school students who have younger siblings participating in ELO at Monte Vista, helping families coordinate pickup.

  • Program hours and structure will remain the same. Students will continue enjoying the familiar ELO experience, including structured enrichment and activities.

  • Student support remains a priority. Students will continue to have access to appropriate services and individualized supports, including special education supports, as applicable.

  • Family sign-out procedures will remain familiar. Families will continue using the 6Crickets system, with pickup and sign-out taking place at their student's assigned ELO location.

Families requesting transportation will need to complete a transportation request form. Additional information about transportation, pickup procedures and program operations will be shared before the transition.  We have also attached an FAQ to this post for reference.  Please reach out if you have any questions.

Our commitment to students and families

We understand that change takes adjustment, and we are committed to working with families to make this transition successful.

Our goal is to ensure every student has access to a safe, welcoming and engaging after-school experience where they can learn, connect, explore new interests and thrive.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we strengthen Expanded Learning Opportunities for our Monte Vista school community.
