Music

Our school site's music teacher for the last four years has been Madelaine McSorely. She comes to Monte Vista with much experience and musical expertise. She teaches all grade level classes general music (according to state standards) for 35-40 minutes a week. In addition, 3rd graders learn to play the recorder while 4th and 5th graders have an additional 45-minute band or orchestra class once a week. 4th and 5th graders get to express initial interest and commitment to one particular instrument and then usually commit to that instrument for two years. We have a Winter Vocal music concert in December and another one in May, at the end of the school year, where each grade level performs a set of musical numbers. These concerts are one of the parents' favorite events to attend each school year with a full house. Similarly, our 4th and 5th graders also have a Winter and End-of-Year demonstration and celebration of learning performance as well.

We also have an annual school musical put on under the direction of Ariel Theatrical during the Spring season. We usually have a cast of over 40 students, ranging from grades 1-5. Past shows have been Lion King, 101 Dalmations, Winnie the Pooh, and this next school year will be Willy Wonka. Finally, we have a weekly musical theatre club that meets during three different 9-week sessions, where each 9-week session ends with a culminating performance of 3-4 choreographed musical numbers.
